The romantic drama follows two tourists in their 20s who meet on a train from Budapest to Vienna. Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) engage in conversation, and they like each other. The American tourist, Jesse, is going to Vienna to catch a flight home. On the other hand, Celine is on her way back to Paris from dropping by her grandmother’s. She’s a Parisian scholar at the Sorbonne.
The characters are drinking some coffee as they keep talking at the buffet car when Jesse has this wild idea: Why doesn’t Celine get off the train with him in Vienna and spend the entire day together. They end up spending the evening together, and sadly, they both are aware that this will likely be their only night together.
The movie has a very high score on Rotten Tomatoes. Most viewers see it as a bittersweet celebration of romantic fission as Linklater crafted a detached portrait of a unique couple. Today, the thought-provoking romantic drama is considered to have captured the purity of love unlike any other.
