Today’s movie of the day is 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon, an animation directed by Chris Sanders. The film is a mainstream success that was nominated for and won multiple Academy Awards. It was released in 2010.

The movie explores the story of a teenage Viking named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) living in a fantasy world of dragon hunters. Bent on proving himself worthy of his community’s acceptance, he sets out to find a creature to slay. Hiccup ends up capturing a Night Fury dragon (voiced by David Randall Thom). In an unexpected series of events, he grows fond of the creature. He learns that the dragons are grossly misjudged by the community and becomes close friends with the Night Fury, giving him the name Toothless. This strong friendship eventually enables them to create an environment where dragon creatures and humans can coexist.

At its core, the movie goes beyond just Vikings fighting dragons. It shines a light on the superficial societal nature of judging individuals on their appearance rather than the content of their character. Its ability to entertain while at the same time challenging us to examine our biases is what makes it one of the best family movies of all time.

How to Train Your Dragon has been certified as fresh on Rotten Tomatoes earning an incredible 99% rating from critics. The movie boasts of a star-studded cast with famous names such as Jonah Hill, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, and Kristen Wig voicing some of the characters.
